1976' Esmond Diamond Jubilee Book
Jacob and Patrenellie Leier left their homeland of Russia in 1992 with their four children: Ned, Theresa, Barbara and Steve. They arrived in Catskill, NY; where Jacob worked for about a month as a common laborer.
From there they moved to Eureka, SD; living there for a short time. Railroad jobs were available in Jamestown so once again Jacob and his family moved. This time they stayed for seven years, where Jacob worked in the roundhouse. During this time, Agnes and George were born.
In 1899, Jacob left to homestead in Rich Valley Township, seven miles south and one mile west of Esmond. It took them three days traveling by horses to reach their destination. They brought with them some horses, one cow and a few chickens along with their personal belongings. In order to claim these 160 acres, they built a small house and broke up the soil for raising flax. As time went on, other homesteaders decided to leave, so Jacob bought their land. He lived her for approximately 30 years, farming close to 1000 acres. Four more sons were born: Jake, John, Vincent and Rochus.
Jacob was involved in church affairs and was member of the school board. In 1927, he retired and moved to Esmond. Jacob passed away on April 21, 1947 and his wife on August 15, 1961.

Benson County Farmers
Press. Jacob Leier, Sr. April 21, 1947 death came to Jacob Leier, Sr, one of
Esmond's pioneers and one of the most respected citizens, due to the
infirmities of old age, being 84 past. Mr Leier took up a homestead south of
Esmond in 1900, the farm now occupied by his son John. Prior to coming to
Esmond, Mr Leier lived at Jamestown for seven years, employed while there by
the NPRR in the engine service. Mr. Leier was a native of Russia, coming to
this country and to Jamestown, N. D. In 1895 accompanied by Mrs. Leier and some
of the older Leier children. Mr. and Mrs Leier were married in Russian and
observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1936. Mrs Leier was formerly Miss
Patrinella Miller. The funeral of Mr. Leier was conducted friday morning from
the Church of St. Boniface where a most solemn High Requem Mass was chanted.
Father Vincent Ammann, pastor of the church, was the celebrant, Father Othmar
Steinhardt of Selz was deacon and Father Boniface Steutz of Balta was the sub-deacon.
Father Steinhardt, a longtime friend of the deceased, preached the funeral
sermon which was eloquent and inspiring and at the close carried words of
condolence to Mrs. Leier and other members of the Leier family.
Imterment took place in the Catholic cemetery near Esmond. Six grandson carried their grandfather to his last resting place. The pallbearers being; Lambert Leier, John Marthe, Jr., Benjamin Fix, Walter Schatz, Leonard Schatz and James Leier. father Vincent Ammann, O. S. B. accompanied by several acolytes went with the funeral cactage to the burial grounds, blessed the grave, and intoned the final rites. Besides Mrs Leier the following children survive: I. J. (Ned), Mrs John Marthe Sr. (Theresia); Mrs Antone Fix, (Barbara); Jake and Rochus all of Esmond. Steve of Minot N. D.; Mrs Adam Schatz (Agnes) of Balfour; George of St. Paul, Minn; and Vincent of Santa Fe, New Mexico and John of Esmond. Figures prove that Mr. Leier was very much like the patriarchs of old for he left 129 descendants which consisted of 10 children, 65 grandchildren and 54 great grandchildren. The people of Esmond extend their sympathies to the Leier family in their loss of a loving husband and a kind and noble father. (Esmond Correspondent) |
