Mom's Quilts ~ Enjoy the slideshow!
From Nancy:
Watching Mom slip slowly away over time from Alzheimer's was very difficult. Dad would often have to remind us that when she was being "difficult" or when she would say something "hurtful" that this was not her but the disease! Along with much sadness and a lot of heartbreak when she didn't seem to remember us, we would find humor in the things that she did or things that she would say. Mom's favorite saying was, "Taint funny, McGee!"

From Dorothy:
One evening at Mom's, there were about six of us sitting around the dining room table playing cards. Mom asked if she could play too, so we gave her some "old cards" to let her think she was playing with us. She would be content for a while, then she would want to draw or play her cards. While playing our card game, we were constantly calling each other by the wrong name, and Mom caught on to that and said, "You know, I think we should all be wearing name tags!"

From Jerrilyn:
Grandma could never remember where the TV remote was (Alzheimer's), and many times would hide it in odd places. One day when we asked where the remote was, she went to the cupboard and got out the recipe box, she was so sure the directions to find it would be in that recipe box.
During one of our visits to see Grandma at the nursing home, they were having their activities time and were talking about the weather. They asked if anyone knew what the weather outside was like, and grandma says "Ask Rochus Leier, he knows everything."
One summer when Mark and Kathy came to ND, and Amanda must have been about 7 years old... Grandma burped really loud and Amanda said to her "Grandma what do you say?" Grandma had to think for a minute and then she said, "Goodbye burp." I about died laughing on that one.
And, I will never forget the time Grandma came out of her bedroom dressed in Karen's clothes!!

From Eunice:
Occasionally ,Mother would succumb to fatigue and take a nap, inevitably something or someone would wake her up or cut her nap short! Her favorite saying was "there is no rest for the wicked!" I have said that many times, even though I never ever thought she was wicked!
I remember a 4-H meeting at our house and Mrs. Herman (Gladys) Preuss was the leader. My demonstration was baking an Angel Food cake, cleanup, etc. It was a success, and after that I baked Angel Food cakes for Ann's cafe at least once a week, I think I got $3.00 a cake! Because I loved to bake , one time I was making oatmeal cookies and the recipe called for rolled oats? When I asked what rolled oats was, I was informed by one of my siblings that the oatmeal had to be rolled with a rolling pin, which I proceeded to try. Everyone got a big laugh out of that adventure. However, the reason Lou decided to marry me was because of the potato salad (Mom's recipe) I made for him. To this day he reminds me of this every time I make potato salad...

Potato Salad
5 # bag of red potatoes - cooked, cooled, peeled & sliced thin
6 eggs - hard boiled 1/4 cup onion - finely chopped
Dressing: 1 cup mayonnaise, 1/2 cup milk, 1/4 cup mustard, 2 tb. sugar, salt & pepper - to taste
Mix all of the ingredients together until smooth in a blender (esp. if you have picky eaters who do not like onions), or stir by hand, or shake together in the mayonnaise jar. I learned from Mom to put this together without measuring and sometimes I have to adjust by adding a little more milk or mayonnaise. It is not a finished masterpiece unless Lou tastes it and lets me know if it needs anything else.
Top with 6 hard boiled eggs peeled and sliced and sprinkle with Paprika.
P.S. This is the way I remember making the salad with Mother's instructions but there is no reason you can't add other veggies like celery, or if you prefer to use Miracle Whip instead of mayonnaise.

From Karen:
When Mom & Dad were first married, Mom was learning how to make bread, but couldn't get the dough to rise. She thought she had flubbed up the dough, so she hurried to bury the dough out in the garden before Dad got home to see it. The next day Dad noticed something rising up out of the soil in the garden - all her dough needed was a little heat to make it rise! Dad had so much fun telling everyone this story, and Mom never lived it down!

"NOODLA" with PLUM SAUCE (Patty's & Dorothy's Recipe)
Our Mom always saved a little batch of her homemade bread dough to make the Noodla, but Patty and Dorothy said you can use frozen bread dough or frozen bun dough!!
Take the batch of dough let it sit in refrigerator overnight, then make small sized rolls (about the size of a short fat finger, lol) on a lightly floured surface, and let it rise.
Put 1/4 c. of water and 1/4 c of lard (butter or margarine) ...add salt...in a frying pan (cast iron works best with tight cover!)
Place the rolls of bread dough in the frying pan, cover with tight lid, and cook until crispy on one side!
(listen for it boiling and then frying - maybe 10 mins)
Do NOT uncover, but just take peaks to make sure it isn't burning!
Dunk the Noodla in homemade Plum Sauce, YUMMY!!!
